Ariel is a fictional character and the titular protagonist of Walt Disney Pictures’ 28th animated feature, *The Little Mermaid*, released in 1989. She also features in the film’s prequel television series (1992–1994), the direct-to-video sequel *The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea* (2000), and the prequel *The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning* (2008). In all official animated appearances and merchandise, Ariel is voiced by Jodi Benson. She holds the distinction of being the fourth Disney Princess, the first non-human princess, and the only princess to became a mother to her own child.
